One of Italy’s most iconic whitewater runs is once again under threat. The Sorba River, a crystal-clear torrent flowing through the mountains of Valsesia and the village of Rassa, has been at the center of a 15-year fight against a hydroelectric project that would permanently alter the river and the surrounding landscape.
Thanks to years of resistance from local paddlers, residents, and environmental organizations, the original project has already been significantly reduced. But after a recent court decision in Cassation, the fight is not over. The groups opposing the project are now preparing one final appeal, and they believe they have strong chances of success because key economic, financial, and environmental elements were not properly considered in the ruling.
After nearly two decades of legal battles, the groups involved must now raise funds to cover appeal and court costs.
