The back story
Husband and wife team Nolan and Louise Freebury developed their original cleaning kit, a product called Mud Mate when they realised there was nothing on the market any good at cleaning football boots, which was a problem with having two football playing children
Mud Mate began life as a brush that was screwed onto single-use plastic carbonated drink bottles to give the bottle a secondary use. It worked by filling the bottle with water, and then attach the Mud Mate brush to be used it to clean football boots, walking boots, bike wheels etc. Since its launch the Mud Mate has been through a couple of changes and is now supplied as a kit with the brush having an integrated tap and mud scraper and is supplied with a 500ml bottle (when Coca Cola changed their bottle neck design we could no longer promote the product as another use for single plastic, it has a standard 28mm thread and so still fits many other bottles though) a hosepipe connector, drying cloth and waterproof bag. There are now seven different kits in the range, each predominantly the same but targeted at different markets. These are Mud Mate, Golf Mate, Bio Mate, Bio Mate Watersports, Paw Mate (a softer brush) and Mud Mate Ultra – a really stiff brush.
Bio Mate, Bio-security for paddlesports and partnership with Paddle UK
The Bio Mate Watersports came about in 2024 when we realised that bio-security in Paddlesports was becoming increasingly important but that even though a national UK government campaign called Check Clean Dry was being pushed to paddlers – where they are encouraged to check clean and dry their boards and equipment on leaving the water, what was missing was a really easy “how” to do it. So we took the original Mud Mate and re-vamped it for the paddle market and, as soon as doing so Paddle UK invited to become an official partner of theirs as part of their Clear Access Clear Waters campaign which we were absolutely delighted to accept. We were also given permission by the Invasive Species Secretariat to use their Check Clean Dry logo
Bio Mate is now seen as the market leader in the UK for paddleboard cleaning and we hope to extend our reach to Europe and beyond. Key UK influencers and stakeholders regularly feature us on social media and magazine articles and we are invited to attend the UK’s most prestigious events to promote the product and Check Clean Dry, most recently being the SUPer Festival in Torbay, the predecessor to next years ICF Sup World Cup event in the same location at which we are also invited
Bio Mate is also the current holder of the East Midlands Chamber Excellence in Innovation Award, the only award we have ever entered (up to now).
We have in the last few days received stock of the brand new handle which is replacing the hosepipe connector featured in all but the first picture. The handle makes using the Bio Mate a more comfortable experience whilst having the duel role of being the hosepipe connector also. It works by one end being screwed into the Bio Mate brush head, and the other fitted to a standard hosepipe fitting. The Bio Mate has been designed in its entirety by Nolan Freebury and we own all rights and tooling of all the products.
